Smarter Seafood: An Exploramer initiative

In 2009, Exploramer founded Smarter Seafood, an eco-guide that advocates for the healthy management of marine resources in the St. Lawrence.

Located in the town of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, Exploramer is a recognized scientifically-oriented museum institution whose mission is to raise public awareness of the St. Lawrence marine environment and the importance of preserving it. Through its Aquarium, museum, offshore excursions and educational program, Exploramer is a showcase for the biodiversity of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Every year, Exploramer receives some 32,000 visitors.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to get involved by joining forces with Exploramer as the organization’s spokesperson. Smarter Seafood is completely in line with my idea of Healthy Eating through respect for the resources and products found in our own backyard.”

Smarter Seafood ecoguide

Every year, in anticipation of the new fishing season, Smarter Seafood establishes a list of marine species , that are edible, sufficiently plentiful in the St. Lawrence, sustainably harvested with regard to marine ecosystems, and with which consumers may not be overly familiar. These species represent an opportunity to diversify your consumption of seafood products and explore new flavours while supporting the conservation of biodiversity.

Smarter Seafood platform

A digital, marketplace-type platform for the sale of by-catch and small volumes.

The aim of the Smarter Seafood platform is to provide the fishing industry with a tool that can be used to quickly line up commercial buyers for its by-catch and small volumes. It also helps to promote lesser-known species.
