Establishments with the Smarter Seafood certification:

  • Undertake to offer at least two of the marine species featured in the Smarter Seafood ecoguide;
  • Receive an annually updated list of species promoted by Smarter Seafood;
  • Receive a directory of purveyors that offer Smarter Seafood species in order to facilitate procurement;
  • Enjoy free access to a digital, marketplace-type platform for the purchase and sale of seafood products (by-catch and small volumes);
  • Enjoy visibility on the Smarter Seafood platform by appearing in the list and interactive map of Smarter Seafood certified establishments;
  • Benefit from public promotion (distribution of list of certified establishments to Smarter Seafood members, showcasing of certified businesses in social media, interviews, etc.);
  • Have the opportunity to participate in promotional events and activities organized by Smarter Seafood;
  • Benefit from a discount rate when attending the Smarter Seafood Expo;
  • Receive Smarter Seafood promotional items (pins, posters, decals, stakes for fish market displays, etc.);
  • Benefit from technical assistance and tips on designated Smarter Seafood species;
  • Are entitled to receive support throughout the certification process.

Thinking about getting certified? Here’s what you need to know…

Certified establishments undertake to offer a minimum of two different species featured in the Smarter Seafood list. By doing so, they are entitled to display the Smarter Seafood trademark for a 1-year period (April to March). The cost of certification includes promotional items directly related to certification.

Costs :

  • Restaurants, hotels, inns and B&Bs : 125 $;
  • Fish markets and grocery stores : 150 $;
  • Fishers, mariculturists, algae harvesters : 200 $;
  • Food processors (small-scale production) : 200 $;
  • Food processors and distributors: 450 $;
  • Institutions and organizations : 125 $.

Steps for becoming certified

  1. Complete the questionnaire by clicking here.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the terms of reference, which provides all the information you need on certification.
  3. Request and sign the certification agreement.
  4. Make the payment.
  5. Put your certification on display and start promoting the marine species of the St. Lawrence to your clientele.
